Bowdoin College: Research and Instrument Support Technician, Schiller Coastal Studies Center, Orr's Island, Maine. Responsible for day-to-day operations of the Marine Laboratory at the Schiller Coastal Studies Center. Utilizes knowledge and experience to provide technical expertise to students, faculty, and outside researchers on the capabilities and operation of the marine laboratory systems and equipment. Maintains a safe and productive working environment for all end users. Colorado State University: A Research Associate II position is available in the labs of Drs. Melinda Smith and Alan Knapp in the Department of Biology at CSU in Fort Collins, CO. Preference will be given to those who can start by August 15th, 2018. Initial appointment is for one year with possible renewal for a second year contingent on performance and funding. Research in the Smith and Knapp Labs focuses on plant community and ecosystem ecology and the impacts of climate change and climate extremes on grassland ecosystems. The technician will be expected to lead projects in the field and lab and to supervise undergraduate students who are assisting with projects. These projects involve field experiments manipulating precipitation in grasslands in CO, KS and WY. Florida State University: The research technician will be based in the Department of Biological Sciences at FSU in Tallahassee, Florida, supervised by Dr. Andrew Rassweiler, but will also work closely with Dr. Sarah Lester in FSU’s Department of Geography. The technician will help support an exciting portfolio of projects focused on the topics of marine biodiversity, coral reef resilience, ecological state change, marine spatial planning, and sustainable fisheries and aquaculture. Research in the lab is inherently interdisciplinary, focusing on addressing fundamental questions in marine ecology, but also on applying those insights to conservation and management. The position includes a broad diversity of responsibilities and the ideal candidate is excited to participate in a range of research activities. The initial focus of the position will be on measuring marine biodiversity as part of a multi-institution Marine Biodiversity Observing Network project. Indiana University-Bloomington: Laboratory Manager Position in Wetlands Ecology The School of Public and Environmental Affairs (SPEA) at Indiana University seeks to appoint a Laboratory Manager in Dr. Chris Craft's Wetlands Lab on the Bloomington campus. South Florida Water Management District: The Everglades Systems Assessment Section of the South Florida Water Management District in West Palm Beach, FL seeks an ecologist to join a multi-disciplinary team assessing the effectiveness of restoration activities on Everglades ecosystem recovery. West Virginia University: A research assistant position is available in the Quantitative Forest Management lab of Dr. Steve Chhin in the Division of Forestry and Natural Resources. The general objective of the project associated with this position is the restoration of the historical structure and species composition of mixed conifer forests in the Sierra Nevada region of California. The project will involve determining the effective intensity of mechanical thinning treatments to remove shade tolerant competitors and thereby promote the productivity of old-growth trees, reduce the risk of stand replacing fires, and ensure forest resilience to climate change. Dendrochronological analyses will be conducted to reconstruct historical forest stand dynamics to provide a target for forest restoration efforts. The position will also involve modeling growth and survival of old-growth trees and young plantations within the Sierra Nevada. The research assistant will primarily be responsible for conducting the laboratory components of the project and assist with data analyisis and report writing. Secondary roles will include assisting with field research. Applicants should preferably have completed a Master’s degree, but those with a Bachelor’s degree and experience with research will also be considered.
